MIO recently performed back to back performances at Mountain View Correctional Facility and Bowdoin College

At Mountain View Correctional Facility, the audience of 30+ incarcerated men, many of them young, talked about what resonated in the play - and ended up describing every scene. The impact of their incarceration on their families, the difficulty making phone calls, missing important moments while inside, addiction, chasing their mother’s car down the street, direct experience with gun violence. Common comments were: “How do you know what our life is like?” “Can we sign up to do theater with MIO?”  We had a vulnerable conversation about advice for re-entry, and the audience member’s dreams: Freedom. Sobriety. Love. Being there when their kids have kids.

During the dialogue at Bowdoin College, audience members shared what resonated: A mother’s pain. Loss. Frustration. Everybody just wants to be loved.

I wish mothers had the resources they need to raise their children.

Each incarcerated person is someone's child.

It’s sad that as a society we give up on people instead of giving them the resources they need.

Not being able to talk with your lawyer for a year is a real experience for people who are incarcerated. This play reminds me why I’m pursuing public defense.

Carceral spaces are meant to disorient - I could feel that with “Broken Clock.”

Outside you can choose how to use your time - inside that’s stripped away.

People forget that people who are inside have been doing the right things a lot of the time. Young people are on the streets because that’s where the love is. What are the stories of the things they’re doing right?

And audience members shared their own dreams: Loved ones out. Freedom to breathe. Collective thriving. Empathy. Family unity.

We are still in need of donations to complete the “Broken Clock” tour of free performances in communities and inside prisons across Maine, and to support our direct work with youth and adults impacted by systemic oppression.

Make a gift today to support MIO’s projects designed to transform a culture of punishment and isolation to one that thrives in connection, dignity, and accountability.
