Join us on Monday at Bowdoin College
The Fall tour of “Broken Clock” is in full swing right now with back-to-back performances at Mountain View Correctional Facility on Friday, September 19, and Bowdoin College on Monday, September 22. We are touring in communities, prisons, and on college campuses in a moment when public discourse is fragile, polarized, and threatening. On Friday and Monday, we will be performing in two different institutions and in conversation with two different demographics with the hope that this tour can connect us across systems and boundaries. The performance at Bowdoin College is open to the public and we invite you to join us.
“Broken Clock” continued to deepen in a three-day residency at Celebration Barn last week. Thank you to the Celebration Barn for hosting us and to Chalia La Tour for leading workshops during the residency. There was a great turnout and powerful dialogue in response to the Friday night performance.
Some of the audience reflections at Celebration Barn were:
We don’t always see the people who are locked up - I’m feeling them here tonight.
We have to ask ourselves - who are we mad at, and who are we afraid of?
What if the only thing someone knew about you was the worst thing you ever did?
I had weekly scheduled phone calls with a friend who was incarcerated - I remember how isolated she felt, and I could hear the fear in her voice and the chaos in the background.
Incarceration brings people far from their families and support networks.
I felt this scene viscerally. I felt the audience breathing with the cast.
How can we support children whose parents are incarcerated? How can we support mothers and parents?
This was a powerful depiction of the love between child and mother, the pain of separation, the desire for connection.
Binary news stories cover up complex stories like these.
Such a powerful line in the play - “I need you all to dream with me.”
This is the essence of humanity. We’re talking about life and death.
Thank you to all who joined us and shared your voices.
